30 more climate change books found

31 03 2008

I found 30 more recent books on global warming and climate change, 2005-2008, which I intend to post to Koha, and then post the gov docs electronic resources to ePrints.

electronic gov docs

I compiled a set of about 40 recent government documents on global warming and climate change in “electronic resource” format that I’d like to load to Koha and ePrints. I’ll have to continue experimenting with the SUDoc Number that is used rather than Dewey Decimal or LC Call. I’m working on this now.

Depositing to Eprints

27 03 2008

I entered two items into Eprints so far and it was pretty straightforward. However, I am not quite sure how to restrict access to an item and am wary of putting anything in that is copyrighted. Any luck on that Mike? Another problem I noticed is that the subjects are Library of Congress numbers and not Dewey. I suppose we could manually add them into the section that is called Uncontrolled Keywords?

Template/Theme samples

20 03 2008

I uploaded some templates that would look similar to the Garland theme that we have on this blog.  The one that I think is most similar is up now on tb3.iis.syr.edu.  There is also a completely different theme on the class test server at tb5.iis.syr.edu/kent.  Let me know what you all think.

and furthermore…

Mike’s review of DL project work:

  • cPanel installation review,
  • decide on DL theme/content
  • subject area is global climate change/ sustainable living
  • ! Joomla: review tech specs, features, interface, site GUI potentials
  • Koha: add items, users
  • ePrints: add digital resources items
  • Repository: add images
  • item contributions are books, journals, articles, website resources, news site RSS and feature archives, film/ video, audio, images
  • find audio/ video resources
  • work with group chat, wiki and blog
  • research authentication for restricting copyrighted items– check !Joomla extensions, e.g. restrict viewable image size to one size above thumbnail as fair use, prevent downloading and printing
  • keep track of class technical discussion postings

Another MARC resource

19 03 2008

I also found this site from the Library of Congress that has more extensive information about MARC tags.

http://www.loc.gov/marc/authority/

I know it has helped me understand some of the more nitpicky items.

Team 3 Status

19 03 2008

I have been tinkering with the Joomla themes and installed a new version for you all to see on our homepage, tb3.iis.syr.edu.  If you don’t like it it is easy to remove but it does look very similar to the Garland theme in WordPress.

I am continuing to enter my 20 items into Koha and have been fine with books but have struggled to enter some open access magazines.  The items I collect are focused on animal conservation and science experiments.  I entered one item into Eprints and it went into Team 1’s repository but that problem has been fixed according to Todd.  I will have to test it later.

I am also thinking of ways to organize our site, such as what tabs will we have for overall sections.  Some Ideas are Catalog, Images, Digital Collections, About Us (or How Did We Get Here – proposed by Nikki), News. Visual consistency is another issue I am exploring and will see about the wrapper that Ben mentioned to integrate Eprints into our Joomla.

My progress to date

19 03 2008

My focus (as far as resource-gathering goes) has been on educational websites and more obscure ecology/conservation organizations (particularly those with a strong educational imperative). It has been a challenge to catalog these, but I think I have found a way to download MARC records from libraries that have already cataloged these resources, and then modify those records to suit our purposes. One problem I am currently trying to solve: I would like (if possible) for the records associated with these items to be clickable from within the catalog. I’m currently investigating Koha forums to see if I can find any guidance on this subject. I’ll also be cleaning up already-entered records to more closely conform to our agreed-upon standards.

Just a few days ago, I set up a chat reference function through Meebo and installed it on the site.

My work for the next week (aside from finishing up cataloging items): I will be mining the GEM database for lesson plan documents or other items that are copyright free and can be uploaded to Eprints. I’m also checking with Flickr contacts to see about permission to use their nature photography in our image gallery (and gathering Creative Commons use/attribute items as I do this).

Thus Far…

19 03 2008

My tasks so far have been to build a list of books and documentaries and add their records to our catalog.  I was getting hung up on including every piece of information on the items, even though I do not have them in front of me.  Then I remembered Todd said he wasn’t as concerned with the records as the library itself – so I relaxed.  I also searched for organizations that would be useful in ecological situations.  These have added to this blog, but will most likely not remain here as they should be on the site itself.

My main objectives for the next two weeks are to run through a Joomla tutorial to get a better understanding of the functionality, try to organize the site a little, change all LC records to DDC format, and build a links tab for all of the organizations we have found.

I am thinking this blog should be linked to the site as a “How did we get here?” resource – then have a regular blog about hot topics in the news on the site itself.  I am not sure, but I believe Joomla has a blog application which could be used for that purpose.

MARC help pages

18 03 2008

Here is the MARC help site I was talking about.  The general page is called Understanding MARC Bibliographic and covers the Basics. The specific part of it that deals with the most commonly used codes is called MARC 21 Reference Materials.

Hope these help.
